FAQ’s

Which brush should I use for Dry body brushing?

Whether you are a beginner or have been body brushing for years, your bristle preference will vary. Every body brush in the range will give you excellent exfoliation and stimulation, you don’t have to press hard on your skin to get the results. Bodecare bristles are categorised as Extra SoftSoftMedium and Firm.  So as you become more experienced in body brushing you can graduate to the next level bristle and continue getting the results you are after.

Extra Soft

Face brush: Meant for delicate skin on the face, the bristles are silky soft, gentle enough for a baby. Suitable for working with Cleansers and removing face masks

Soft –

Face brush: Soft bristles suitable for cleansing and removing face masks.
Nails/Feet: Suitable for buffing residue off nails and lightly cleaning dirt under nail.
Dry Body Brushing: Best for someone just new to dry body brushing, will still provide good stimulation. This is a great starting point until your skin gets use to dry brushing and then you can graduate to firmer brush bristles.

Medium

Dry Body Brushing: Suitable for someone wanting extra stimulation, flexible bristle, great exfoliation. First time dry body brushers could also start with this level brush, because you only need to use light strokes for dry brushing.

Firm –

Dry Body Brushing: Suitable for experienced dry body brushers, firm, stiff bristles, providing optimum exfoliation, stimulation and massage for the skin.
Nails: Firm, stiff bristles great for removing dirt from under nails, especially if you are a gardener or mechanic.

It is simply a choice of which brush meets your needs and comfort levels.

How do you recommend cleaning the brush and how often?

As so much dead skin cells sloughs off while dry brushing and works its way into the brush bristles, it’s important to clean your dry skin brush regularly.  After each dry brush spritz the bristles with an organic tea tree spray and leave to hang in a well ventilated area.  For a great clean, wash in hot soapy water with a Tea Tree Oil Soap  once a week and leave in the sun to dry or  a well ventilated area, with bristles facing down.  With regards to the Natural Face brush, it is best to hang this brush to dry. Resting this brush face down on the delicate goat’s hair bristles will bend them out of shape.

Cleaning schedule guide:

  • As a guide if you dry brush daily, it is best to clean your brush once a week.
  • If you dry brush every 2nd to 3rd day, it is best to clean your brush once a fortnight.
  • and if you dry brush once a week, it is best to clean your brush once a month

Why work from the left to right of the body?

  • Working from left to right or Clockwise motion is generally favoured for massage as it releases tension, helps strengthen and enrich the body.
  • Anticlockwise motion ‘stirs up’ energy in the body. It is usually followed by clockwise massage.  That is why you use circular motion both clockwise and anti-clockwise on the stomach, to energise your digestive system.
  • Line strokes up, against the direction of hair growth are to assist with exfoliating the dry skin build up around the hair follicle and reduce risk of ingrown hair and increasing circulation.

Why brush on dry skin?

Brushing with dry plant bristles on dry skin gives optimum results in exfoliation of skin and stimulating the circulation and lymphatic system. If the bristles are wet, they will be too soft and scratchy and will not exfoliate or stimulate the skin in the same way.

How often can you body brush?
Brushing once a day, just before a shower or bath is perfect.  Morning, noon or night it doesn’t matter, just when it fits in with your schedule.  The ultimate is body brushing in an open space with fresh air, combined with deep breathing.   I recommend not to dry brush on freshly shaved or waxed skin as this may be too irritating.  Wait for a day or two to start dry brushing again, especially if you have a firm dry body brush.

Is the Cino Brush syntheticWhy use a synthetic brush over a natural fibre brush?

The Cino brushes are synthetic. The Cino Bath brush, is purely for lathering up bath soaps and lotions while in the shower or bath.  It is a luxury item and feels great. The bristles on this brush are so soft you could use them on your face.
It is not meant for dry brushing.
I included a synthetic range as well, because I had a group of beauty therapist colleagues who only used synthetic face brushes on their clients because the bristles do not mildew.
Synthetic brushes are great for any water based use, because they do not tend to mildew.  However for dry body brushing I would always recommend a natural bristle and would never body brush with any type of synthetic brush/glove.

What are toxins? How does dry body brushing help to reduce toxins in your body via our circulatory system?

Toxins can be made by normal activities like breathing or exercise which can produce wastes like carbon dioxide, lactic acid and glycolic acid or from medication, food, pollution and many other influences.  Toxins are tucked away in whatever available spaces can be found, pending removal.  They are stored in places like: the mucus membrane in the respiratory system; as cholesterol in artery walls; stones in kidneys and bladder;  crystals around joints.  Regular body brushing assists the body in normal removal of metabolic wastes.  The skin is the largest organ of the body and is sometimes called the “third kidney” due to its role in the elimination of waste from the body.    The lymph is a transit system which travel via vessel much like the blood.  The lymph transports food and oxygen from the blood to the cells and the cells then return the waste back through the lymph to the blood.  Dry brushing helps improve the movement of lymph, so that are cells receive the food and oxygen at a better rate and the cells excrete waste back to the blood at a better rate.  So to with our Circulation, underlying the skin is vast network of capillaries called the circulatory system. Dry brushing stimulates the connective tissue attached to the capillaries to improve circulation travelling to the heart.

Does dry body brushing make my skin glow?

Yes regular body brushing will make your skin glow because it is assisting the body in a number of functions like:

  • Exfoliates dry, rough skin, enabling moisturizing products to readily absorb into the skin
  • Assists with stimulation of sweat and oil glands, contributing to the restoration of moist, supple skin
  • Strengthen the skin pores by assisting with increased skin tone
  • Gentle stretching of connective tissues from brushing helps to regenerate production of collagen and elastin fibres.
  • Alleviates vein and lymph conjestion to reduce orange-peel appearance or cellulite

Why is a natural bristle better than a synthetic bristle for dry brushing?

Pure plant bristle, has tiny hooks and imperfections which gather the dead skin while sweeping over the body, leaving the skin with that healthy glow.  Where as, nylon, synthetic bristle or gloves are smooth and do not offer any health benefits or the same type of exfoliation.  The tiny hooks and imperfections of the plant bristle are so good at picking up debris that I have a client who successfully removed head lice with the Japanese Body Brush.

Why do you have so many plant bristle selections?

Each plant bristle has it’s own unique feel and texture. Every dry brush user has a preference to how firm a bristle they like to use. Different parts of the body also require a firmer or softer bristle, eg. The feet it is recommended to use a firm bristle, for the rest of the body you can use soft-medium-firm, for the face it is recommended to use extra soft and for the scalp we recommend a firm bristle or the wood pin hair brush.

Which hair brush is right for my hair type?

We suggest timber backed brushes.  For short or thin hair use a soft bristle brush like the slim line hair brush.  For thick hair or long hair use the rubber cushion base with timber pins as it assists with detangling.  Anyone looking for anti-static brushes must use a rubber cushion base.
